England Wheelchair Rugby League team to visit Houses of Parliament
England’s 2008 World Cup winning Wheelchair Rugby League team are to visit the Houses of Parliament next Tuesday (January 12) to be recognised for their achievements.
Under the guidance of Head Coach Phil Roberts, England lifted the World Cup undefeated beating the likes of Pacific Islands, France and Australia before meeting the host nation once again in the final in Sydney.
England continued their unbeaten form into the final where they became the first Wheelchair Rugby League world champions by beating Australia 44-12 with a man-of-the-match display coming from inspirational captain Martin Norris.
Phil Roberts said: “Winning the World Cup was a great experience for everyone involved in the England Wheelchair Rugby League set-up and to be recognised at this level is something we are immensely proud of.
“Australia saw a great uptake in participation in Wheelchair Rugby League during the World Cup and we hope that this continued publicity will attract new people to the sport, as it has already, with South Africa having recently taken up the game.
“Wheelchair Rugby League is developing rapidly in this country and we know that a strong domestic competition will give England a great chance of retaining the World Cup when the next tournament comes around.”
